5 signs your website is costing you enquiries

The websites that lose the most business rarely look broken. They load, they have the right phone number, they were probably quite nice five years ago. But visitors arrive, wander, and leave without getting in touch — and nobody notices, because a quiet website doesn't send an error report. Here are the five signs we see most often.

1. It takes more than three seconds to load

Every extra second of load time costs conversions — on mobile especially, visitors simply give up. Test your site on your phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. If you're watching a spinner, so are your customers. Oversized images are the usual culprit and often fixable in a day.

2. Nobody can tell what you do in five seconds

Show your homepage to someone unfamiliar with your business for five seconds, then ask: what does this company do, and for whom? If they can't answer, your headline is working against you. "Welcome to our website" tells people nothing. "Landscaping and grounds maintenance for Nottinghamshire homes and businesses" wins work.

3. The next step isn't obvious

Every page should make one action unmissable — call, book, request a quote. If your only call to action is a "Contact" link hiding in the menu, you're relying on visitors to do the selling to themselves. Put a clear button in the first screen of every page and repeat it as they scroll.

4. It's awkward on a phone

For most local businesses, well over half of visitors arrive on mobile. Tiny text, buttons too close together, forms that fight autocomplete — each niggle sheds a percentage of would-be enquiries. Your website should feel designed for the phone first, because that's where your customers are.

5. You can't remember the last enquiry it sent you

The clearest sign of all. A website is a salesperson: if a salesperson brought in no leads for six months, you'd act. If you don't know how many enquiries your site generates, that's the first fix — measurement takes an afternoon to set up and changes every decision after it.

The good news

Every one of these is fixable — sometimes with a focused improvement sprint rather than a full rebuild. If you recognise your website in this list, request a free website review. We'll tell you honestly what's costing you enquiries and what it would take to fix — even if the answer is "less than you'd think".
